This guide is here to help you settle into Chiang Mai with fewer surprises, fewer unnecessary mistakes, and more time for the things that actually matter.

It is not meant to be a complete travel guide. It is a practical local guide for residents, builders, creators, and community members coming to 4Seas.

Since you will be staying at 4Seas, this guide focuses on daily life around Nimman, basic logistics, transportation, payment, SIM cards, food delivery, visa reminders, medical help, and emergency information.

Short Stay

For short-term visits, many travelers may enter Thailand under a visa exemption or short-stay arrangement, depending on nationality and current policy. A short stay is often around 30 days, but the exact number of days may vary by nationality, visa type, and current immigration policy.

If you need to stay longer, you may need to apply for an extension or a longer-term visa.

Extension

Some short-term visitors may be able to apply for an extension at the Chiang Mai Immigration Office. Extension fees are 1,900 THB for 30 days.

// 5. Transportation

Chiang Mai Airport (CNX)

Chiang Mai Airport is very close to Nimman — around 15–20 minutes by car.

Airport to 4Seas

• Grab — transparent pricing, no bargaining needed
• Bolt — usually cheaper than Grab
• Airport taxi counters are also available after landing, usually around 150 THB to city areas

Getting Around the City

Recommended: walking + ride-hailing. Motorcycles are convenient but come with a risk of police checks. If you do not have a valid license, avoid riding around the four corners of the Old City and the Nimman / MAYA intersection between 9:00 and 15:00.

// 7. Seasons in Chiang Mai

Rainy Season (July – October)

The city is greener and quieter. Expect afternoon showers. It is still very livable and a good time to settle into a slower rhythm.

Burning Season (March – April)

This is the period with the most unstable air quality in the year, due to agricultural burning across the region. Some days can have significant haze and pollution. Check AirVisual or IQAir before outdoor activities.

High Season (November – February)

Cooler mornings and evenings, more comfortable weather, and more visitors and events. This is usually the most popular and comfortable season to be in Chiang Mai.

// 8. What to Wear

Chiang Mai is warm most of the year, and daily life is casual. Most people wear T-shirts, light clothing, shorts, sandals, or flip-flops.

Flip-flops or easy-to-remove shoes are practical because many local spaces may ask you to remove your shoes before entering.

From November to January, mornings and nights can be cooler. Bring a light jacket or hoodie and one or two long-sleeve tops.

// 9. SIM Card and Internet

Having a Thai phone number is very useful in Chiang Mai, especially for food delivery, ride-hailing, and local services.

Recommended Setup

1. Buy a short-term travel data card or eSIM before arrival, so you have internet as soon as you land.
2. After arriving in Chiang Mai, buy a physical SIM card at 7-Eleven — usually cheaper than the airport.

Please bring your passport when buying a SIM card, as registration is required.

Not recommended: Buying a SIM card at the airport (more expensive) or relying only on international roaming, as some food delivery and ride-hailing apps may not work well without a Thai phone number.

Must-Have Food Delivery Apps

• Grab — ride-hailing and food delivery
• LINE MAN — food delivery and local services

A Thai phone number makes food delivery much easier. Riders usually do not call international numbers.

Food Around Nimman

Nimman has a high density of cafes and restaurants. You can easily find Thai food, Chinese food, Western food, vegetarian options, cafes, desserts, and late-night food. Prices are slightly higher than more local areas, but the options are convenient and stable.

// 11. Payment and Currency Exchange

PromptPay, WeChat Pay, and Alipay

Many places in Thailand accept QR payments. If a merchant displays a PromptPay QR code, you may be able to pay with WeChat Pay or Alipay — but this does not work everywhere.

Cash Is Still Important

Please prepare some Thai baht in advance. Small merchants, local shops, markets, laundry shops, and transport options may still prefer cash. Keep small notes for daily use.

// 12. Daily Life Around Nimman

Nimman is one of the most convenient and enjoyable neighborhoods in Chiang Mai. As a 4Seas resident, almost everything you need day-to-day is within walking distance or a short ride away.

The area has a remarkable density of good food — from early morning Thai breakfast spots and fresh juice stalls to Japanese ramen, Korean BBQ, quality Thai fine dining, and everything in between. Cafes are everywhere, many with strong WiFi and a good working atmosphere.

Beyond food, Nimman has independent boutiques, night markets, yoga studios, gyms, massage shops, coworking spaces, and a lively bar and social scene. MAYA Mall is a five-minute walk for anything from a pharmacy run to a movie. Chiang Mai University is right next door, which keeps the neighborhood active and young.

It is the kind of area where you step out the door and something interesting is usually happening.

// 13. City Areas: Old City and Nimman

Old City

The historical and cultural center of Chiang Mai, surrounded by the old city moat. It has many temples, guesthouses, small cafes, local restaurants, markets, and cultural sites. The rhythm is slower, more local, and more connected to Chiang Mai's Lanna culture.

Nimman

Short for Nimmanhaemin, Nimman is one of Chiang Mai's most active modern neighborhoods. Close to Chiang Mai University, it has developed into a lively area with cafes, restaurants, bars, creative spaces, coworking spaces, and international communities.

For 4Seas residents, Nimman is the most practical daily base.

For short-term visitors, opening a Thai bank account is generally not realistic or necessary.

For short-term residents and event participants, do not plan around opening a Thai bank account.

You may use the 4Seas address as a delivery address. Please:

• Write your own name as the receiver
• Include your phone number if required
• Tell reception in advance if you are expecting a package
• Pick up your package as soon as possible
